DESCRIPTION

Benrus was an American watch company. New York, founded 1921, best known now for the field watches they built for the US military in Vietnam. This is the other side of the business: a clean, well-made dress automatic from their civilian line, made in the 1970s not long before the company wound down.

The dial is the reason to want it. Full printed Arabic numerals, all twelve of them, in a thin modern sans, which makes it genuinely more legible than most dress watches of the era, where markers get abstracted into little batons. Silver with a fine texture, slim polished hands, and a date window at three. SELF-WINDING · 17 JEWELS printed under the center, the way watches used to announce what they were.

The case is a soft cushion shape with faceted flanks that catch light along the edges, which is a very 1970s idea, and it wears smaller and flatter than 36mm suggests.

Automatic movement, running well and keeping good time. The case is chrome plating over base metal with a stainless steel back, standard for the line and era.
