DESCRIPTION

This one is properly old. The caseback is stamped WATERPROOF — a word the FTC pushed out of American watch advertising in the late 1960s, which puts this piece in the 1950s or very early 60s. Seventy years on, it still runs.

The dial has aged the way good ones do: stark white in 1956, warm ivory now, with applied numerals at the even hours and faceted dart markers between them that throw light as your wrist turns. Long sweep seconds hand, no date, nothing to read but the time. 17 JEWELS · SHOCK RESISTANT · UNBREAKABLE MAINSPRING printed across the lower half, which is how watches used to advertise themselves — right on your wrist.

Manual wind, so it needs winding once a day. Twenty or thirty gentle turns of the crown each morning, stopping the moment you feel resistance. People who like these watches like that part.

A word on size: at 32mm this is small by current standards, and that's not a defect — it's 1950s proportions, when this was a normal men's watch. It wears close and flat, looks right under a cuff, and it's a genuinely unisex size. If you're used to a 42mm watch, know what you're choosing.

Chrome plating over base metal with a stainless steel back. And to be clear about that caseback stamp: treat it as not water resistant at all. Seventy-year-old seals do nothing.
